State Universities authorities recently called on athletes to exercise fair play and honesty as during the just-ended university games holding in the University of Buea. They were speaking during the opening ceremony of the 9th edition of the University Games. Addressing more than 900 athletes and 5000 spectators, the Vice Chancellor of Buea, Professor Cornelius Lambi, said that University Games is an opportunity for the public to see students from various universities flex their legs after long hours at the Amphitheatre where.
Welcoming the different delegations, he reminded all present that Buea keeps a legacy and ability to do things right, and prayed that this custom be maintained.
He called on athletes to avoid foul play and injustice, exhorting them to embrace a spirit of brotherhood and fair play. "Hug one another in love rather than kick each other in anger," he said. He added that games should provide an opportunity for friends and foe alike to embrace each other at the end of the encounter, either as losers or winners.
"All fraud, no matter what, is considered an examination fraud and is punishable by the Minister of Higher Education," Dr Mrs Njeuma, President of the National Federation of University Sports (FENASU), warned the athletes. She encouraged them to play with honesty, light-heartedness and to exercise fair play.
The Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo, for his part, thanked the Vice Chancellor of Buea for the energy and hard work put in organising the event. He acknowledged the financial support made by Milla Roger, Cameroon's Roving Ambassador, which made it possible for the games to hold.
The second part of the games was made up of march- past by the athletes from the different institutions, alongside their fan clubs with a great demonstration of the different cultures of the different tribes where the institutions are situated. This was followed by a display by the students of Buea, dressed in the national colours, as they demonstrated the rich cultural diversity, determination and readiness of the youths to work as a one-man delegation.
The day's activities ended with a football match and an 800-metre race for both boys and girls. For the race, Noah Amanda and Boau Bienvenue came first from the Yaounde and Ngaoundere Universities, Tchoula Yilewo and Bouba Osar second from INJS and Siantou Institute, while Nguisso Edimo and Njai Walters were third from the University of Douala and INJS respectively.
The football encounter pitted host university, UB, against the National School of Youths and Sports (INJS), the latter coming out victorious.
