Increasingly, there are calls for the Catholic Church in Africa to strive for material and financial autonomy. Encouragingly, the lay faithful, considered as the live wire of the Church, have evidently understood the importance of being involved in the development of the local Church. But beyond this awareness, the Code of Canon Law clearly indicates what the tasks of the laity are. It states that the laity is "bound ---to work --- so that the divine message of salvation becomes known and accepted to all persons throughout the world." The Code also speaks of the special duty of the lay people to "imbue and perfect the order of temporal affairs with the spirit of the Gospel," because in so doing, "they thus witness to Christ in a special way”.
