The Vice President of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, NECC, Mgr Samuel Kleda has revealed that the life of the President of NECC and Archbishop of Yaounde, Mgr Simon Victor Tonye Bakot, is no longer in danger, following injuries he sustained in a ghastly accident on Thursday, March 27, on the Douala-Yaounde highway. Mgr Samuel Kleda made the disclosure while presiding at the 33rd plenary session of NECC in Yaounde, which held from April 02 to 04.
Mgr Victor Tonye Bakot was successfully operated on Sunday, March 30, at the Raymond Poincare Hospital in France. Information gathered from the Archbishop's close aides, indicate that he is responding positively to treatment.
At the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, shortly before his evacuation to France, Mgr Bakot was lucid and conscious. He personally thanked all those who through their rapid intervention rescued him from death. He also blessed his diocesan community before leaving.
Meanwhile, Yaounde Archdiocese officials have informed Christians that
due to the absence of Mgr Bakot, the archdiocesan pastoral programme
will be slightly modified. In the meantime, Mgr Bakot will be replaced
by the Auxiliary Bishop, Christophe Zoa, and the Vicar General, Mgr
Joseph Befe Ateba.
The Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic, the Apostolic
Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, the Yaounde archdiocesan
community and well wisher across the national territory and beyond,
facilitated the evacuation of the Archbishop of Yaounde to France.
