VANHIVAX, a therapeutic auto vaccine used
in immuno-therapy for HIV patients, has received the blessings of the Church in Buea. Its inventor, Professor Victor Anomah Ngu, a biomedical researcher who has been making use of the vaccine on HIV patients for many years now, recently explained its strengths to Christians of Buea Diocese in the presence of Bishop Immanuel Bushu.
Before a presentation made to explain the efficacy of the treatment, Mgr Immanuel Bushu celebrated a Holy Mass to thank God for Professor Ngu's creativity, at the St. Charles Lwanga Mission, Molyko. On behalf of the Christian Men Association, (CMA) in Buea Diocese, the group that invited Prof Anomah Ngu to Buea, Tekwe Samuel urged Christians to pray for the vaccine's success as stated in the Mass intention.
The Bishop, who based his homily on the theme: "Do not be afraid, for I am with you," (Acts 6: 1-7) enjoined the congregation to thank God for Prof Ngu's creativity, age and determination to cure the scourge of our time - HIV/AIDS. He noted: "our talents are God's gifts to us." The Bishop praised Professor Ngu for what he termed "wonderful things". "Your presence here to share the Eucharist with us is the greatest thing to do", the Bishop said. He continued that Prof Ngu, now 82, ought to be praised while he is still alive.
It emerged from other doctrinal issues discussed on the occasion that people have to thank God for being sick. "Being sick is not a bad thing. It is a gift from God when you live your life in Christ," the Bishop said. He disclosed that it is always good to thank God for making us sick because, "In sickness, we have the time to talk with God, become humble and enable doctors to practise their vocation." The Bishop pointed out that sickness makes one suffer, but when one does, the person prepares himself or herself for heaven and becomes stronger by bearing the sickness with courage. He declared that it is possible to use sickness as a means of going to heaven.
He therefore expressed the wish that the vaccine, whose main problem is to have the Cameroon government recognise its efficacy, should go beyond the 18 patients, which Professor Ngu says, VANHIVAX has cured this far.
About VANHIVAX
During the presentation made after the Mass, Prof Ngu explained that VANHIVAX is produced using viruses from a patient's own blood. The main advantage, he noted, is that this curbs the risk of recontamination. He said the durability of the treatment depends on the immune system of an individual. This implies that treatment is most effective in the early stages of HIV infection, when the immune system has not been destroyed.
The only side effects encountered in the treatment of the 18 patients declared cured, he explained, were fever and body aches for a few days. VANHIVAX-based therapy costs FCFA 50.000 and treatment, for a person with a good immune system, is expected to last about one to two months.
Professor Ngu lamented that most people only come for treatment when other treatments have failed and the patient is almost dying.
The vaccine is both curative and therapeutic, and starts working immediately it is administered.
Prof Ngu, treats cancer, tropical viral diseases and sickle cell anaemia. He said most people he has treated no longer want to be seen in his company, talk less of testifying to the effectiveness of the vaccine. He said his vaccine is being pirated internationally even before it has been recognised in Cameroon. He acknowledged that the government once assisted him with FCFA 5 million, but said the amount was not enough to purchase any of the equipment he needs.
