Bamenda III Council has promised land for the Catholic University of Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province which is still in its embryonic stage. The Mayor of Bamenda III Council, Prince Pius Ngwa Amando, made the promise during the council’s 2010 budgetary session which held at the Nkwen Fon’s Palace.
On the day’s real subject, a budget of FCFA 173.5million was voted as the council budget for 2010. The session, which the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam chaired, saw a drop of 13.25 percent in the 2010 council budget, down from last year’s budget which stood at FCFA 200 million. The drop, the Mayor explained, results from the fact that Bamenda City Council has taken over some responsibilities Bamenda III Council previously handled.
Another matter that was deliberated during the session was the high crime wave in the municipality. A councillor, Mbuya Asobo, complained that it has been observed that Nkwen, which falls within Bamenda III Council area, has become the bastion for criminals. He cited several cases of assault, rape and the killing of women in particular.
The Mayor replied that security was the prime concern of every good citizen. Supporting the SDO for Mezam, he exhorted all to be vigilant and help the forces of law and order to fish out criminals from their neighbourhoods. He added that measures were underway to carry out a census of all the inhabitants of Bamenda III to weed out all bad elements. He encouraged various quarters to form vigilante groups.
The Mayor then read out a memorandum of understanding between the three councils in Bamenda and the City Council. The memo spells out the limits and obligations of each council. He further revealed that a meeting between the three councils and Bamenda City Council was in the pipeline. The meeting, he explained, will focus mainly on seeking ways of solving the nuisance which the commercial sector by motorcycle is causing.
