From the 2nd to the 8th of January, 2010, the 33rd Bishops of Cameroon Annual Seminar held in Bamenda under the theme, “Priestly Life and Priestly Formation”. The seminar began with a Solemn Holy Mass which the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon President, Mgr. Victor Tonye Bakot, celebrated in St. Joseph Metropolitan Cathedral, Mankon.
After the Bamenda Archbishop’s address, the Governor of the North West Region took the floor. He said he was pleased the seminar had been organised in his region and laid emphasis on Church- State partnership in the domain of education and social development.
On his part, the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon President, Mgr. Victor Tonye Bakot, declared the seminar open. The assembly of Bishops welcomed the new Bishops recently appointed and thanked Bishops who have retired.
Work then continued with inputs from:
- Father Jacques Philippe Tsala, Rector of Otele Major Seminary, who presented a paper on, “Human Relationships and the Priesthood.”
- Father Agapitus Nfon, Rector of Bambui Major Seminary, who presented a paper on the seminar theme, “Spiritual Formation and the Priesthood.”
- Father Achille Eyabi, Rector of Douala Major Seminary, presented a paper on the theme, “Theological Formation and the Priesthood.”
- Father Joseph NDO-OKALA, Director of Studies of Nkolbisson Major Seminary spoke on, “The Church and Priesthood”. This contribution articulated two aspects: The Priesthood and Priestly formation and Ecclesiastical Ministry
- Father Giles Ngwa Forteh, National Secretary of Catholic Education (SENECA) briefed Bishops on the new approach of State distribution of subsidies in schools which does not follow any public system. The Bishops demanded that the National Secretary of Catholic Education approaches the Ministries of Education with respect to the distribution of State subsidies in favour of schools in dioceses found in rural areas.
- Mrs Anne Daisy Peeters, consultant at the Holy See, briefed participants on the language of some hidden ideologies on new anti-Christian ethics.
The Bishops agreed and decided that the celebration of the Year of the Priest at the national level will take place in April 2010. They reflected on the celebration of the 50 years of Independence of Cameroon and also exchanged ideas on some of their personal problems.
The Bishops appointed Dr. Yves TABI OMGBA as National Coordinator of the Catholic Health Organisation in Cameroon.
The Bishops expressed their gratitude to the Christians of the Archdiocese of Bamenda and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre team for their cordial reception and the attention accorded them at the Pastoral Centre. Their next Seminar will hold in Garoua from the 8th to the 14th of January, 2011.
