Interviewed by Jude Abanseka
The Youth Federation President, Walter Nsoh, is a Chemistry teacher in Government Bilingual High School Mbatu. He has been Bamenda Archdiocese Youth Federation President since 2006. L’Effort Camerounais spoke to him to take the pulse of youth activities in Bamenda Archdiocese and assess how these are helping youths address today’s challenges and better prepare for the future. Excerpts:
How do the youths contribute to the Church’s wellbeing?
Youths belong and play an active role in Small Christian Communities. They also take part in decision making in various Church commissions in Bamenda Archdiocese. In a nutshell, youths contribute their quota socially, morally and financially to the Church’s upkeep and growth.
What do you think are the contemporary challenges Catholic youths are facing today?
The principal challenge youths are facing today is unemployment which is the springboard of rising crime and immorality that are plaguing our society today. There is also the wrong use of the Internet and other mass media. Many youths also have a low self esteem.
How can the Church assist youths in overcoming these problems?
The Church can help youths address these problems by creating income generating activities in all parishes. Youths can also be trained to become self-employed. Seminars could also be organised to train youths on the advantages and proper use of the Internet and the mass media. Besides youth camps, more retreats and recollections should be organised so they can be spiritually uplifted.
How has the Youth Federation impacted your Christian life?
The Youth Federation has helped me understand that the youths have been reserved a special place in the Church through the Youth Apostolate Commission. Through this commission youths are involved in Church activities and are helped to do what is good and to avoid evil.
