Colonisation, which actually replaced slave trade came along with christianity. Colonisation had economic and cultural objectives: Economically, colonisation was out to exploit the resources in Africa for the develoment of Europe. Socio-culturally, Africans were considered a backward people and colonisation came to change their mentalities and lifestyles. During this period, everything African was condemned and discouraged. Missionaries considered all african practices as demonic, and forced africans to abandon them. Africans were encouraged to adopt a European style of life. The missionaries missed the point as they ignored the fact that africans were living in a socio-cultural system proper to themselves, a system which links the past, the present and the futur.
